Myopia

Myopia also called as near sightedness is ocular condition where distance vision is blurred while near vision is normal. The reason being light rays entering in eye are unable to focus on retina due to increase eyeball length. It is of concern now as we are seeing rapid rise in myopia cases post covid pandemic specially in children. Reason for myopia development is many, like genetic, environmental or developmental.

common symptoms of myopia are:

  • Blurred vision for distance
  • Headache
  • Eye strain
  • Squint of one or both eyes
  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Difficulty in driving

Children may not complain as they are unaware of symptoms or many times unable to express themselves. Low vision in children if uncorrected can lead to amblyopia (LAZY EYE). Following signs may hint you regarding low vision of child

  • Going close to television /mobile
  • Holding books close to face
  • Unable to copy text from blackboard in school
  • Reduced social interaction

Consult your eye doctor if any of symptoms are noticed. Your eye doctor can do complete eye check-up including visual acuity assessment with retina check-up.

Treatment

Myopia can be treated by glasses, contact lens or refractive surgery. Refractive surgery is advised only after 20 yrs. as children tend to have frequent change of glass power. Change of glass power in less amount can be observed in adults also. Drug treatment in the form of atropine eye drop is useful to prevent rapid progression of myopia in children. Wearing improper power glasses can give you eye strain so annual eye check-up is necessary.

Along with theses few lifestyles modification can help you in slowing progression of myopia:

  • Avoid excessive screen use
  • Increase outdoor activities
  • Follow 20-20-20 rule while using laptop
  • Eat healthy food
  • Protect form direct sunlight
  • Regular eye check-up
  • Control of hypertension/diabetes
  • Regular exercise
